200 - Minimum Safe Work Standards and Employee Conduct

  1. Acts that jeopardize your safety or the safety of others are prohibited.
  2. You shall inform your supervisor if you are using prescription or nonprescription medications that may cause drowsiness or adversely affect work performance. Any non-occupational injury or medical condition that could result in restricted work activity must also be reported to your supervisor.
  3.  If you are uncertain about proper work procedures, you shall ask your immediate supervisor for instructions rather than take unnecessary chances.
  4.  If you feel that you cannot continue to work safely because of fatigue, illness, or other reason, you shall promptly report the condition to your immediate supervisor.
  5.  Off-duty employees visiting the plant shall comply with all plant safety rules and regulations.
  6.  Loose clothing, jewelry, and other items, such as non-breakaway lanyards, shall not be worn when working in the vicinity of moving or rotating equipment or in an environment, such as climbing ladders, where items could be entangled or caught.
  7.  Hair shall be worn in such a manner that will prevent it from being caught when working around moving machinery.
  8.  In the event of fire or emergency alarms/ announcements, only those employees who have been trained to respond to the scene shall do so.
  9.  All warning signs, barricades, and barriers shall be strictly observed.
  10.  You shall use the PPE specified for each job.
  11.  Prior to performing activities on or near equipment where the unexpected energization, startup, or release of stored energy could occur and cause injury, all potentially hazardous energy sources shall be isolated, tagged out, and otherwise disabled to protect personnel.
  12.  When working on or above a steel grated floor, a suitable covering shall be placed over the grating to prevent a falling object hazard below, or the danger area below shall be barricaded.
  13.  Employees shall ride only in areas specifically designed for personnel occupancy on all cranes, bulldozers, forklifts, locomotives, or other mobile units.
  14.  The use of explosive actuated tools is prohibited without the approval of the site safety coordinator.
  15.  All tools and equipment, regardless of ownership, shall be of proper type for the job and maintained in good condition.
  16.  Tools and equipment shall only be operated in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines or recommendations.
  17.  Job-made tools are only allowed if a manufactured tool is not available. The design of all job-made tools shall be reviewed and approved by an engineer. This review and approval shall be documented by a condition report (CR).
  18.  You are responsible for knowing the load limits of the equipment you use and not exceeding those limits. Examples include harnesses, lanyards, ladders, personnel lifting devices, etc.
  19.  Walk; do not run. Use handrails and ascend/descend stairs one step at a time (certain training, drills, and emergency situations are excluded).
  20.  Do not stand in front of closed doors as they may open suddenly.
  21.  Do not read handheld items while walking.
  22. If the work task can only be accomplished by the position in the swing path of a door, the door shall be locked or guarded.
  23.  Ladders or other safe supports shall be used to reach material on high shelves or similar locations. Boxes, crates, chairs, or similar items shall not be used to gain access.
  24.  When going to sit in a chair ensure the chair will be where you intend to sit by gaining positive control of it.
  25.  Use proper body positioning when sitting in a chair. Be particularly careful when sitting in chairs with castors, which can slip out from underneath you if you shift your body weight too far forward. Keep chair legs on the floor and do not prop feet on your desk.
  26.  Be careful when using swivel chairs. Do not lean back without testing your weight gradually.
  27.  Watch for telephone and office machine cords, wastebaskets, and other trip hazards.
  28.  Use handles when closing file cabinets, desk drawers, and safe or vault doors.
  29.  Keep file cabinets, desk drawers, and locker doors closed when not in use. Open only one file or desk drawer at a time. See that file cabinets are properly secured after use.
  30.  Check office furniture regularly for sharp edges, splinters, and loose casters or bolts.
  31.  Sharp objects, such as knives and scissors shall be properly stored.
  32.  Do not adjust or clean power-driven office machines when they are in operation.
  33.  Electrical repairs shall be made by qualified personnel only.
  34.  The contents of file cabinets shall be arranged so that the load is evenly distributed to help prevent the cabinet from toppling if a drawer is fully extended.
  35.  When it is necessary to vertically stack file cabinets, they shall be properly secured.
  36.  Storage racks shall be secured to walls or other substantial supports unless designed to be free standing under load.
  37.  Material stored on top of racks or shelves shall not be stored within 18 in. of the ceiling, light fixtures, light bulbs, or sprinkler heads.
  38.  Heavy objects shall be placed far enough away from the edges of desks or tables so that they will not fall or be knocked off incidentally.
  39.  Cords to electrically operated equipment should not be routed across aisles or passageways. Any such cord shall be covered to prevent damage to the cord and eliminate the tripping hazard.
  40.  Where approved for use, portable heaters shall be maintained at a safe distance away from combustible materials. Portable heaters shall be equipped with a tip over switch or rated at 200 watts or below and shall be turned off when unattended.
  41.  Surge protector- (power strip) type cords and cables shall not be ganged or “daisy-chained” together.

NOTE: Surge protectors are meant to protect equipment from a surge in voltage. Ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) are designed to protect people from receiving a shock.
