206 - Barricades and Temporary Hazard Warnings

NOTE: Refer to Sections 804 and 805 for barricading excavations and open pits and holes.

  1. Obey all hazard warnings. When in doubt, stay out.
  2. Barrier tape, chain, and rope is a temporary physical obstruction intended to warn workers and limit access to a work area.
    NOTE
    : Substantial physical barriers may be used in place of barrier tape, chain, or rope with proper hazard posting per items 4, 5, or 6 of this section.
  3. Use orange flagging, rope, or barrier tape for areas where there are no recognized hazards, such as equipment staging, temporary storage, vehicle traffic control. No entry/exit point posting is required.
  4. Use yellow and black or yellow CAUTION barrier tape, rope, or chain when there is a hazard present. It shall completely enclose the hazard. Post caution sign in a minimum of one location with the following information: type of hazard, supervisor name, date, and phone number. No entry/exit point posting is required. Entry is allowed if a hazard is not present or can be safely avoided.
  5. Use red and black or red DANGER barrier tape, chain, or rope when there is an imminent danger present. It shall completely enclose the hazard. Post DANGER sign on all accessible sides that includes the following information: type of hazard, supervisor name, date, and phone number. Entry/exit point shall be posted. Personnel not part of the crew directly engaged in or supporting the work activity shall not enter until permission is granted.
  6. Use red and white DANGER barrier tape OR red and black DANGER tape, chain, or rope when there is an electrical arc-flash hazard present that needs to be identified. It shall completely enclose the hazard and be at the appropriate distance from the arc-flash hazard as specified in NMP-FLS-003. Post DANGER sign at all entry/exit points that include the following information: type of hazard, supervisor name, date, and phone number. Entry/exit points shall be posted. Personnel not part of the crew directly engaged in or supporting the work activity shall not enter until permission is granted.
  7. Temporary hazard warnings, including barrier tape, chain, or rope, shall be removed by workers involved in the work when the hazard has been eliminated.
    NOTE
    : When a temporary warning sign cannot be hung adjacent to the hazard, a waiver shall be used.
