212 – Lightning

When working outdoors, weather forecasts shall be checked to anticipate the threat of inclement weather. Allow enough time to travel to a safe location, such as a fully enclosed building or a hard-top vehicle with the windows rolled up. Sheds, covered porches, break areas, tents, golf carts, or all-terrain vehicles do not protect you. Use the 30-30 rule as the main lightning safety guide. After you see lightning, count to 30. If you hear thunder before you finish counting, go indoors, and suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Supplemental staff shall observe their organization’s policy on lightning safety. If there are none, this guidance shall be observed.
