404 - Hearing Protection

  1. Hearing protection shall be worn in designated high-noise areas, in temporary high-noise work situations, or as designated by management.
  2. Permanent high-noise areas greater than 85 dB requiring hearing protection are posted and include power block buildings, including turbine/generator area, the reactor/containment areas, intake structures and diesel buildings. For permanent high-noise areas where double hearing protection (earplugs plus earmuffs) is required, the area will be posted with this requirement.
  3. The site safety coordinator can repost permanent high-noise areas during outages as not requiring hearing protection if a noise survey shows noise levels are less than 85 dB.
  4. Temporary high-noise areas greater than 85 dB may be posted as required hearing protection.
  5. It is your responsibility to keep hearing protectors in sanitary condition and replace them as needed.
  6.  Electronic hearing protection is permitted so long as it has an NRR factor provided by the manufacturer and the user follows manufacturer’s suggested use.
