407 - Climbing Guidelines

Work areas greater than 4 feet shall be accessed by using scaffolds, ladders, man-lifts, or similar methods.

If none of the items above can be used and there is an open side that could lead to a fall, three-point climbing using a harness and double self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) with 100% tie-off will be worn.

  1. The supervisor will ensure a JHA is completed while planning the climb. Listed below are examples of items that should be considered on the JHA. The JHA must be approved by site safety and the plant manager or designee.
    •  Verification that the structural members being climbed are sufficient to support the expected load.
    • The safest path to the climb destination.
    • If applicable, suitable tie-off point to use fall protection once the climb destination is reached.
  2. The observer shall position themselves prior to the climb to monitor the climb and provide feedback and assistance as needed.
