500 - Hand Tools

  1. Defective tools shall be removed from service and repaired prior to returning to service.
    NOTE: This includes inspecting slugger or hammer wrenches for defects, such as mushroom heads.
  2. Tools shall not be thrown. They shall be transported in such a manner to prevent dropping or falling and secured from being dislodged. Power cords, water hoses, and air supply hoses shall not be used for hoisting, carrying, or lowering tools.
  3. When working in elevated positions, all tools shall be secured or stored to prevent them from falling.
  4. Tools shall not be le feet where they may cause a person to trip or stumble.
  5. Non-sparking tools shall be used in locations where sources of ignition may cause an explosion or fire.
  6. Positive pressure controls or triggers on portable tools shall be maintained in good operating condition and shall not be rendered inoperative by locking devices at any time.
  7. Tools designed to have guards or handles shall be operated with the guards or handles in place, unless adequate provisions, supervisory approval, and precautionary measures are taken so that continued operation of the equipment would not endanger you or others.
  8. All grinders shall have guards in place during grinding operations except for the following conditions:
    • Wheels used for work while within the confines of the item/equipment being ground
    • Mounted wheels 2 in. and smaller in diameter
  9. Refer to Torquing Guidelines for the maximum force allowed when using a manual torque wrench. Torquing forces falling in the DANGER area shall be supplied by using torque multipliers, hydraulic torque wrenches, or other similar methods.
  10. Use of slugger or hammer wrenches shall be limited and only be used with supervision approval.
