503 - Gasoline/Diesel Powered Equipment
- Gasoline/diesel powered equipment shall not be refueled when the engine is running. All fuel shall be transported in approved safety cans. Fuel shall not be poured from one container into another or into the fuel tank of equipment within 50 ft of an ignition source.
- E mployees operating gasoline/diesel powered equipment, such as chain saws or trimmers shall wear safety shoes, hard hat, and eye protection. Full-face protection and gloves shall be worn when the tool used produces flying fragments, such as metal shavings or wood chips.
- Gasoline/diesel powered equipment shall be used only in well ventilated areas. Use of this type of equipment in buildings or enclosures shall be avoided. Continuous monitoring shall be conducted for carbon monoxide when using this equipment in buildings or enclosures.
- Prior to adjusting (other than carburetor adjustments), inspections, or repairs, the equipment shall be turned off, allowed to come to a complete stop, and the spark plug wire removed.
- All gasoline powered equipment, such as chainsaws, trimmers, and power mowers, shall be operated in a safe working condition in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and shall have all safety features in place and operational.
- Chainsaws shall be equipped with a positive pressure control or trigger that cannot be locked in the ON position. Any control or trigger locking device shall be made inoperable, except those required to start the engine.
- When transporting a chainsaw by hand, the saw’s engine shall be turned off and the saw shall be carried below waist level.
- Chainsaws shall not be used directly overhead or at a distance that would require the operator to relinquish a safe grip on the saw. Where possible, chainsaws shall not be operated above shoulder height.
