504 - Abrasive Blasting
- Abrasive blasting shall be performed only by trained personnel.
- Workers performing abrasive blasting shall wear a NIOSH-approved, continuous flow airline respirator that covers the head, neck, and shoulders, except when abrasive blasting is performed in a self-contained or enclosed abrasive blasting cabinet. Breathing air supplied to a respirator shall meet the requirements of OSHA.
- Breathing line couplings shall not be inter-changeable with outlets from other gas or water systems.
- Blast cleaning nozzles shall be equipped with an operating dead man valve which must be held open manually and will automatically close when released.
- Heavy canvas or leather gloves and aprons, or equivalent protection shall be worn when performing abrasive blasting outside of an abrasive blasting cabinet.
- Personnel working in the vicinity and exposed to the direct effects of abrasive blasting shall wear goggles, an appropriate respirator, and hearing protection.
