507 - Scaffolds
- Construction, inspection, and use of scaffolds shall meet the requirements of applicable procedures.
- Handrails shall be installed to the greatest extent possible on all open sides and ends of scaffolding platforms beginning at four feet.
- Scaffolds shall not be moved until all loose tools, materials, and equipment are removed or secured. Personnel shall not ride scaffolds as they are being moved.
- Scaffolds shall rest on stable footing or be securely suspended and shall stand or hang level. Scaffolds with wheels shall have the casters or wheels locked or blocked to prevent movement prior to beginning work.
- Built-up scaffolds shall be tied off or otherwise secured to provide stability and to prevent tipping.
- Scaffolds shall be locked together vertically by pins or other suitable means at each connecting point of subsequent upper sections.
- A ladder or equivalent safe means shall be used for direct access, such as portable, hook-on, attachable stairway-type, or build-in scaffold ladders, stair towers, or ramps, to and from scaffold platforms. Climbing scaffold rungs is not considered safe access.
- Tools, material, and debris shall not be allowed to accumulate on scaffolds in quantities that will cause a hazard, such as slip, trip, or fall.
- Scaffolding walkways shall have a walkway clearance of 24 in. No materials may block this 24-in. walkway clearance. Storage of materials on the scaffold is prohibited if the scaffold is less than 24 in. wide.
- Motorized platforms shall be used in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions.
- Ensure employees under the scaffold are protected from the potential from dropped objects per Paragraph 812 and NMP-FLS-021 Dropped Objects Prevention.
