600 - Hazardous Chemicals
- Chemicals shall be used in accordance with the instructions on the manufacturers’ Safety Data Sheet (SDS), labels, and procedures.
- Always know the chemical you are using and be familiar with the hazards and special precautions to be taken.
- When handling acids, caustics, or other hazardous chemicals, suitable protective equipment shall be worn. Your supervisor or the appropriate site procedure shall be consulted for instructions regarding personal protective equipment.
- Appropriate berms shall be provided for chemicals stored outside.
- Do not begin cutting or welding operations on any piping or vessel that has contained chemicals until the proper clearance has been obtained and safe work procedures established.
- Emergency showers and eyewash fountains are to be checked periodically for proper operation. If you get chemicals in your eyes or on your skin, flush thoroughly with water for a minimum of 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
- Clear pathways to the emergency showers and eyewash fountains shall be maintained.
- Waste chemicals shall not be mixed without proper authorization. Chemicals retained in the radiologically controlled area for analysis of radioactivity shall never be mixed.
- Each site’s Hazard Communication Plan is on file and available for your review.
- SDSs for all chemicals shall be obtained from vendors and be available at each plant in hard copy or in the online database.
- Approved procedures shall be followed, or the site environmental specialist shall be contacted for instructions regarding the appropriate disposal of any chemicals to be discarded.
