801 - Heat Stress Protection

  1. Ask your foreman/supervisor about safe work practices for these areas.
  2. Coworkers in hot areas shall watch each other for symptoms of heat stress-related problems.
  3. Employees working in extremes of heat and humidity can best judge when to take a break. Ability to withstand extreme conditions of heat and humidity depends on the tolerance of the individual. Take frequent breaks and do not stay in the area longer than needed. Self- determination of potential harm always takes precedence over stay times.
  4. Employees working in extremes of heat and humidity should avoid drinking caffeine and carbonated drinks, which act as diuretics and cause the body to release fluids.
  5. When performing work in a heat stress area, the supervisor shall determine appropriate stay times that shall not be exceeded.
  6. Any employee who must leave a high heat work area due to heat exhaustion shall not reenter the area during the remainder of the shift.
  7. Refer to NMP-FLS-002 Heat Stress for additional information related to work in heat stress areas.
