801 - Heat Stress Protection
- Ask your foreman/supervisor about safe work practices for these areas.
- Coworkers in hot areas shall watch each other for symptoms of heat stress-related problems.
- Employees working in extremes of heat and humidity can best judge when to take a break. Ability to withstand extreme conditions of heat and humidity depends on the tolerance of the individual. Take frequent breaks and do not stay in the area longer than needed. Self- determination of potential harm always takes precedence over stay times.
- Employees working in extremes of heat and humidity should avoid drinking caffeine and carbonated drinks, which act as diuretics and cause the body to release fluids.
- When performing work in a heat stress area, the supervisor shall determine appropriate stay times that shall not be exceeded.
- Any employee who must leave a high heat work area due to heat exhaustion shall not reenter the area during the remainder of the shift.
- Refer to NMP-FLS-002 Heat Stress for additional information related to work in heat stress areas.
