804 - Excavations and Core Drilling/Concrete Cutting

  1. Refer to NMP-MA-046, Excavation, Trenching and Shoring for additional information regarding excavation.
  2. Refer to NMP-FLS-025 Respirable Crystalline Silica and section 813 Silica in this manual for additional information.
  3. Excavation – any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in the earth’s surface formed by earth removal.
  4.  All excavations exposing employees to danger from moving ground, regardless of depth, shall be under the direct control of an excavation competent person as defined by OSHA Standards and/or site procedures.
  5.  Daily inspections of excavations shall be made by an excavation competent person. If evidence of possible cave-ins or slides is apparent, all work in the excavation shall cease until the necessary precautions have been taken to safeguard the employees.
  6.  Before opening any excavation, the presence of underground installations, such as electrical cable, water, communication, or sewer lines in the area shall be determined. Underground installations shall be located and protected during the excavation operations.
  7.  The walls and faces of all excavations and trenches exposing employees to danger from moving ground shall be guarded by a shoring system, sloping of the ground, or some other equivalent means.
  8.  Before performing core drilling/concrete cutting, the presence of underground installations or installations embedded in walls or floors, such as electrical cable, water, or communication lines shall be determined. Present installations shall be located and protected during core drilling/concrete cutting operations.
  9.  Employees shall be protected from falling into an excavation that is four feet. or deeper by guardrail systems, fences, barricades, or covers.
    NOTE: Barricades in item 9 do not include barrier tape, chain, or rope.
  10. The hazard information shall be posted per Section 206.
