806 - Working Over or Near Water
- If working over or near water less than or equal to five
feet from the edge, such as spent fuel pool, intake, or discharge, or where the
danger of drowning exists without the protection of handrails, take the
following actions:
- Wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device (PFD).
- Ensure a life ring with 90 feet of line is readily available and the travel distance between the life ring does not exceed 200 feet. If fall protection will prevent persons from falling into water, a PFD is not required.
- If the water level is five feet or greater below the edge from which you could fall and no handrails are present, fall protection is required.
- Docks and walkways shall be maintained in good condition and clear of all obstructions.
- Consideration shall be given to a means of egress and/or rescue from a water hazard, such as ring buoys with attached line, ladders, etc.).
