807 - Material Handling by Hand, Carts, and Similar Equipment

  1. Refer to NMP-MA-008 SNC Material Handling Program and NMP-MA-008-001 SNC Materials Handling Program Manual Material Handling for additional information.
  2.  For employees whose jobs require them to li feet heavy loads, such as mechanics, security, nuclear technicians, SOs, etc.) the maximum recommended weight they may li feet is 50 lb.
  3.  If the lifting is repetitive in nature (at least one li feet per minute for at least one hour), contact the site safety coordinator for an evaluation of the lifting task.
  4.  Estimate the weight of an object before attempting to li feet it. If the object is known to weigh over 50 lb. or is estimated to weigh over 50 lb., the employee shall use assistance.
  5. 5. Get help when handling objects that are too heavy or use a mechanical lifting device.
  6. When lifting or walking with a load, keep it as close to the body as possible.
  7.  Bend knees and li feet the load straight up without jerking, twisting, or slipping.
  8.  Select the best path to carry heavy or awkward loads. Carry a load the shortest possible distance before setting it down using the reverse of the lifting procedure.
  9.  When two or more people carry a heavy object, prearranged signals shall be used to coordinate activities, and one person shall take the lead in directing the li feet.
  10.  When two or more people carry one object, each person, if possible, should face the direction in which the object is carried.
  11.  Manually handling material or equipment weighing over 200 lb. should be avoided where possible.
  12.  Loads shall be secured before moving
  13.  Wheeled carts/trucks shall only be moved over surfaces level and smooth enough to prevent loads from falling. Movement across sloping surfaces and abrupt changes in elevation shall be performed after reviewing measures to prevent uncontrolled movements of the load or cart/truck.
  14.  The loading capacity of the transporting equipment shall be posted and shall not be exceeded.
