808 - Cooling Water Systems
NOTE: The warm waters of cooling water systems provide an excellent environment for growing microorganisms. These may include the Legionella pneumophila bacteria. The bacteria also live in various manmade and natural environments, such as lakes, potable water systems, and rivers. The concentrations found at SNC have been below that thought to cause disease in healthy adults.
- Refer to NMP-FLS-018 Safety Work Practices for Cooling Tower Systems for additional information on work in or around cooling towers.
- Entry into cooling water systems requires special precautions to protect the health and safety of an individual.
- Procedures or special instructions outline the precautions required at the time of entry, pending site conditions. Contact the site safety coordinator for special instructions.
- PPE may be recommended for an individual entering the cooling water system(s).
- The amount of PPE recommended is dependent on the work performed and the amount of aerosolized sludge or mud expected with more aerosolized mud or sludge needing more PPE.
