810 - Stored Energy
- Stored energy shall be addressed whenever the potential of injury from the unexpected release of electrical or mechanical energy is possible.
- All affected workers shall be aware of the potential for the sudden release of energy when breaching a system. The energy could be an electrical discharge, sudden release of a gas used to pressurize a system, release of steam or water or a release of pneumatic mechanical energy.
- The unexpected release of high-pressure gases, water, or steam can cause the blowout of high-pressure gauges or whiplash of broken high-pressure pipes, tubing, or hoses.
- Workers shall review the tagout to
determine if the tagout includes breaching the system.
NOTE: The tagout may NOT remove the energy. - Each employee working on a system or component shall place his/her body in a position that will prevent being pinned, crushed, struck by, sprayed, or trapped by energy such as steam, hydraulic fluid, arc flash, or moving parts.
- Employees shall verify that energy sources have been de-energized, vented, or removed before working on a system or component.
