900 - Laboratory Safety
- Wear appropriate apron, gloves, eye, and face protection when handling acids, caustics, or any potentially hazardous chemicals.
- Familiarize yourself with the exact location and operation of emergency equipment in the area, such as safety showers, and eyewash units.
- Should acids or caustics come in contact with your skin, flush with large amounts of water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately if needed.
- Should any chemical come into contact with your eyes, flush with large amount of water for a minimum of 15 minutes. DO NOT RUB YOUR EYES. Seek medical attention immediately.
- Laboratory fume hoods shall be used for safe handling of volatile compounds and be maintained in good working order.
- All containers shall bear a label stating the chemical contained and its concentration except for small sample bottles and other special applications stated in laboratory procedures.
- The appropriate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) shall be consulted for complete handling, storage, and other safety recommendations.
- Laboratories shall maintain procedures that outline methodology, required safety precautions, and emergency plans for laboratory disasters.
- No eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing is permitted in a laboratory.
