900 - Laboratory Safety

  1. Wear appropriate apron, gloves, eye, and face protection when handling acids, caustics, or any potentially hazardous chemicals.
  2.  Familiarize yourself with the exact location and operation of emergency equipment in the area, such as safety showers, and eyewash units.
  3.  Should acids or caustics come in contact with your skin, flush with large amounts of water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately if needed.
  4.  Should any chemical come into contact with your eyes, flush with large amount of water for a minimum of 15 minutes. DO NOT RUB YOUR EYES. Seek medical attention immediately.
  5.  Laboratory fume hoods shall be used for safe handling of volatile compounds and be maintained in good working order.
  6.  All containers shall bear a label stating the chemical contained and its concentration except for small sample bottles and other special applications stated in laboratory procedures.
  7.  The appropriate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) shall be consulted for complete handling, storage, and other safety recommendations.
  8.  Laboratories shall maintain procedures that outline methodology, required safety precautions, and emergency plans for laboratory disasters.
  9.  No eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing is permitted in a laboratory.
